RUSSIAN INTELLIGENCE-GATHERING AND PENETRATION EFFORTS INCREASE.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 4 Issue: 149

At a meeting just held in Palanga (Lithuania), the heads of state security services of the three Baltic states concluded that Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), Federal Security Service (FSB) and Russian military intelligence (GRU) are currently intensifying their activities in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The Russian agencies rely partly on remnants of former KGB and GRU networks and partly on newly recruited agents. A top priority of their activities appears to be the penetration of the Baltic states’ Defense Ministries and state security services, and of the staffs of state leaders. The three Baltic security chiefs’ conclusions were summed up by Lithuanian State Security Department Director Mecys Laurinkus in an interview with the Vilnius-based Respublika newspaper yesterday.
