RADUEV RENOUNCES TERROR.

Chechen deputy prime minister Shamil Basaev reportedly met with maverick field commander Salman Raduev over the weekend and persuaded him to forswear the use of terror. Raduev, who last month claimed responsibility for fatal bombings in Armavir and Pyatigorsk, is said to have promised to make no more threats in the future and not to carry out any terrorist attacks. (NTV, May 10) The Chechen leaders are said to have their doubts about Raduev’s claims to be behind last month’s bombs, but his vociferous threats to continue the war for Chechen independence on the territory of Russia proper have embarrassed Chechen president Aslan Maskhadov at a time when he is trying to negotiate a final peace settlement with Moscow.
