SLAVIC UNIVERSITY INAUGURATED IN MOLDOVA.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 137

A Slavic University opened in Chisinau yesterday, founded by Moldova’s branch of the Slavic Language and Culture Foundation and by Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, and Polish ethnic community associations. Instruction will be offered in all those languages and also in Moldovan (Romanian). The university is a private and "commercial" institution. Rector Oleh Babenko paid tribute to president Petru Lucinschi’s support for this initiative since his election. (Itar-Tass, July 14) Leftist Russian organizations, which co-sponsored the initiative, had wanted a state institution financed by Moldova and Russia and with instruction in Russian for the "Russian-speaking population." The government and the Moldovan intelligentsia had opposed that type of institution, seeing it as designed to continue linguistic russification of non-Russian ethnic groups.
