U.S. ENCOURAGES KYRGYZSTAN’S ECONOMIC AND SECURITY POLICIES.

Kyrgyz president Askar Akaev yesterday completed a week-long visit to the U.S. where he met with Vice-President Al Gore, senior State Department officials, the top managements of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, and financier-philanthropist George Soros. The U.S. officials encouraged Akaev to continue progress on economic reforms and regional security cooperation with neighboring Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan and within the framework of NATO’s Partnership for Peace program. The World Bank and the Kyrgyz side reviewed the utilization of a $264 million credit package. The U.S. Export-Import Bank and the Kyrgyz National Bank and Finance Ministry signed an agreement on Eximbank crediting of projects equipped by U.S. firms in Kyrgyzstan. Another agreement was signed with the Case Corporation on deliveries of tractors and combine harvesters to Kyrgyzstan. (International agencies, July 14-16)
