KREMLIN CALLS FOR NATO’S TRANSFORMATION.

Russian prime minister Viktor Chernomyrdin and defense minister Igor Sergeev each called yesterday for NATO’s transformation from a military organization into a political one. Chernomyrdin’s remarks came during an appearance before the Dutch parliament, Sergeev’s upon his return to Moscow from a meeting of NATO defense chiefs in Maastricht. In remarks made a day earlier, Sergeev said that the call for NATO’s transformation, as well as for its subordination to the OSCE, are part of a new concept of European security enunciated recently by President Boris Yeltsin.
