Lithuania’s army will not be able toparticipate in NATO’s Partnership for Peace or continue its role ininternational peacekeeping in the former Yugoslavia if the government doesnot fund the army as planned, its commander told BNS May 16. Gen. JonasAndriskevicius said that in the first quarter of 1995, his forces hadreceived only 66.1% of the funds the military had been promised. More moneymay be available soon, however, Moscow radio reported May 15 that Vilnius hadasked Moscow for $80 billion in compensation for the Soviet militaryoccupation. Under the terms of the August 1993 agreement, Moscow agreed todiscuss such claims.
