Duma speaker Ivan Rybkin told Russian radio June 25 that theparliament was unlikely to vote against Prime MinisterViktor Chernomyrdin in the upcoming vote. He suggested thatthe meeting of the Russian Security Council two days aheadof the voting will resolve the issues bothering mostdeputies, an apparent reference to a possible Yeltsindismissal of some of the power ministers. Over the weekend, various political figures have expressed their views on thevoting, and were divided in predictable ways. Prime MinisterViktor Chernomyrdin issued a statement in his own name onJune 23 and through his “Russia is Our Home” politicalbloc June 24 calling for a compromise. And the latest strawin the wind is a June 26 Interfax report that Yeltsin hasissued a statement saying that he wants to resolve thecrisis through compromise. But the irreconcilables in theparliament continue to collect signatures for thepresident’s impeachment: they have 172 deputies committed sofar, Ostankino reported June 23.
