Thetwo premiers signed agreements to extend their cooperation inthe military-technical area, Russian radio reported June 27. Earlier,the two had signed accords intended to increase trade and to builda bridge between the two countries. Such increased cooperationbetween Moscow and Beijing is not universally popular in Russia.In the Russian Far East, officials fear a Chinese "invasion"of workers and are totally opposed to Moscow’s plans to transfersome territory to China under the terms of a border agreement.And they are taking steps to prevent such a move. In the JewishAutonomous Region, for example, local officials have given theCossacks control of the territory which Moscow plans to transfer.The Cossacks have pledged to defend the disputed territory, Segodnyasaid June 24.
