TAJIK GOVERNMENT REQUESTS UN DEBATE.

Tajik president Imomali Rahmonov yesterday cabled to the current chairman of the UN Security Council, Qin Huasun, a request that the Council discuss the situation in Tajikistan and assist in a political settlement. Rahmonov wrote that Dushanbe accepted the appeal of the UN observer mission in Tajikistan for an immediate cessation of hostilities. (Itar-Tass, May 15) Rahmonov’s request, almost certainly coordinated with permanent Security Council member Russia, follows last week’s successes of the Tajik opposition in Tavildara.
