ARMENIA-AZERBAIJAN….
Presidents Haidar Aliev of Azerbaijan and Robert Kocharian of Armenia did not bother with a neutral site for their fourth bilateral meeting in as many months. Using venue as a symbol of the drive for peace, they met in a border village in Azerbaijan, in a region that itself is in dispute between the two countries. As usual, there was little public information on the talks, but the presidents agreed to continue discussions…. At a rally of 50,000 supporters in Baku, the Azerbaijani opposition, headed by former president Abulfaz Elchibey, denounced Aliev as a traitor and a U.S. pawn. Elchibey and other opposition leaders called for national mobilization and civil war against the government, and a war of liberation against Armenia.
