President Nursultan Nazarbaev signed into law a bill granting him and his family political and financial benefits for life, even after he leaves office. He thus gave the lie to malicious rumors that he had inspired parliament’s offer only so that he, like Caesar on the Lupercal, could gallantly reject it.
