A VICTORY FOR EX-SOVIET SOLDIERS.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 41

Unnamed sources in the German government said on February 25 that Bonn will not deport hundreds of former Soviet soldiers who deserted in the former East Germany. The sources said that the federal authorities had decided to leave the question of how to deal with the deserters up to Germany’s 16 states, a move likely to improve the chances for the soldiers to stay in Germany. Many of the deserters feared they would face jail sentences if deported. (AP, February 25)
