Publication: Monitor Volume: 1 Issue: 94

. Abkhazia’s deputy prime minister, Yuri Voronov, was killed in his house in Sukhumi by unidentified gunmen September 11. Voronov was also the leader of the local section of the Congress of Russian Communities, and was a specialist in Abkhazia’s history who had worked under Vladislav Ardzinba, Abkhazia’s current leader, ever since Soviet times when Ardzinba was director of the republic’s Institute of History and Literature. Abkhaz leaders said that Voronov’s killing was purely political, that the police had detained the hit men, and that the task now was to identify the political authors of the assassination. (16)
