Serhiy Odarych, chief editor of the pamphlet My [We], has been wounded by a shot to the leg outside his Kyiv home during the night of July 28-29. Odarych underwent outpatient surgery. He told the Kyiv newspaper Den that his group has “only one opponent–President Leonid Kuchma. We have no other enemies.” Most recently, My published a story on Ukrainian arms trade and concluded–Odarych said–that “all those involved in the arms trade are linked with the president.” He claimed that “the president’s team” was behind the assault on him. (Den, July 30) Den is a mouthpiece of former prime minister Yevhen Marchuk, a declared candidate against Kuchma in the upcoming presidential election. Marchuk positions himself slightly to the left of the political center, while My belongs to a small, seemingly rightist group which has long attacked Kuchma.
