Austrian interior minister Karl Schloegl said yesterday that he would ask the Russians to provide more information on Soviet arms secretly hidden in his country during the Cold War. Last weekend the current affairs magazine "Profil" reported that the KGB had hidden arms and explosives in Austria for use by Communist partisans should Austria be overrun by Western armies. Schloegl said the Austrians knew of one such Soviet cache outside Salzburg and wanted to find out about the others. (Reuter, May 21)

The Austrian countryside must offer a bonanza for anyone with a metal detector. Last year the U.S. and UK admitted that they, too, had hidden stockpiles of arms throughout Austria. The Americans alone had created 79 weapons caches to be used by Austrian anti-Communist guerrillas in the event of a Soviet invasion.
