BACKLASH AGAINST YELTSIN CAMPAIGN.
Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 107
A backlash seems to be beginning against the saturation coverage given in the Russian media to Boris Yeltsin’s reelection campaign. The state-run ORT TV channel has reported that a large workers’ demonstration took place today in Vladivostok. Protesting that they had not been paid for four months, miners and electricity-workers waved banners — shown on television — reading "Yeltsin is not our president." This is a reference to the campaign jingle "Yeltsin is our president" being played at regular intervals throughout the day on TV and radio. By parodying the jingle on their banners, the workers signify that they are fed up with all of the pro-Yeltsin propaganda. (ORT, "Vremya," 1400 Moscow time, June 4)
