BALTIC NAVAL EXERCISE PRESAGES JOINT FLEET.

The first stage of the Amber Sea 96 naval exercise ended yesterday off Riga. Underway since July 12, the exercise will continue off Tallinn and in the Gulf of Finland. Fourteen ships with some 200 sailors of the three Baltic states are practicing minesweeping, embargo enforcement, shooting, and operational coordination of the three fleets. The exercise is an expanded follow-up to Amber Sea 95 and part of preparations toward forming a unified naval squadron of the three Baltic states. (BNS, July 11, 12, 16)
