BALTIC STATES INEXPLICABLY EXCLUDED FROM PEACEKEEPING CONFERENCE.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 113

The Latvian and Lithuanian foreign ministries yesterday expressed disappointment at not being invited to the June 13-14 conference of 45 governments and 15 international organizations on peacekeeping in the former Yugoslavia. Host country Italy, current chairman in office of the European Union, was cited as invoking "technical impediments" to Baltic participation, despite political support from many countries for Baltic participation in the conference. The Baltic states have peacekeeping units under NATO command in the former Yugoslavia and are scheduled to send additional soldiers in coming months. (BNS, June 13)
