BANS ON AZERBAIJANI PARTIES PROTESTED.

The US Embassy inBaku has registered concern with the Azerbaijani authorities’recent decisions to deny legal registration to opposition parties.At a news conference, US diplomats expressed the hope that theauthorities would take another look at the cases, UPI reportedAugust 10. The Justice Ministry for its part told Itar-Tass thatthe Popular Front, the strongest of the six parties which havebeen refused registration recently, advocated the violent overthrowof the government. The six parties also include the Social Democratsand the New Musavat Party (whose name recalls the historic partywhich led in the formation of the 1918-1920 independent republicof Azerbaijan).
