BELLONA PLEADS FOR NIKITIN’S FREEDOM.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 210

The Norwegian environmental group Bellona yesterday urged the European Parliament to pressure Russian authorities for the release of Aleksandr Nikitin, a retired Russian naval officer charged with treason. Nikitin has been in prison since February for allegedly leaking state secrets on environmental threats posed by Russia’s Northern Fleet. Bellona said the arrest sets a dangerous precedent, both in terms both of human rights and environmental protection. (Reuter, November 6)
