CHUBAIS DEFENDS GOVERNMENT’S ECONOMIC STRATEGY…

First Deputy Prime Minister Anatoly Chubais defended the government’s record in a speech to the Federation Council on June 10. He said that 11 trillion rubles of the 34 trillion rubles in additional revenue which the government promised when presenting its sequestration proposals last month will be gathered from delinquent tax payers by June 30. Chubais returned to the council later in the day to give a speech on the role of the state in a market economy in which he acknowledged that the state’s role must be strengthened in certain specific areas. The deputies also listened to a report by a research team led by Academician Dmitry Lvov, a sharp critic of the government’s monetarist approach. (RTR, June 10)
