CHUBAIS DEFENDS U.S. ACADEMICS.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 107

Russian first deputy premier Anatoly Chubais has reacted with anger to a decision by Harvard University’s Institute for International Development to dismiss two professors. The institute acted after the two men, Jonathan Hay and Andrei Shleifer, were accused by the U.S. Agency for International Development of improperly profiting from their work as consultants in Russia. Now Chubais has thrown his support behind the two men. Saying he suspected the criticism of the two consultants was politically motivated, Chubais said the Russian government will retaliate by severing its ties with the International Development Institute.
