CHUBAIS SAYS DUMA DECISION A FORETASTE OF THINGS TO COME.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 59

Former first deputy prime minister Anatoly Chubais says the Duma’s March 15 decision on restoring the USSR was important only because, as the first major decision taken by the Communist party since its victory in the December parliamentary elections, it provided an indication of the policies the Communists would take once in power. Chubais said the decision would result in the exact opposite of what was intended. Instead of bringing the countries of the former Soviet Union closer together, it had set off a storm of protest and threatened to undo much painstaking work by the Yeltsin administration aimed at improving relations with Russia’s neighbors, he told a television interviewer.
