"CONSPIRACY" ALLEGED IN BELARUS.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 4 Issue: 7

Belarus state television on January 11 presented an alleged "business plan" by Belarusan opposition groups to organize a coup d’etat against President Alyaksandr Lukashenka and to seize power within one year with Western financial support. Describing some of the planned actions as "terrorist," the TV program claimed that the opposition is asking for $32 million from Western organizations to support the alleged undertaking. On January 12, opposition leaders dismissed the allegations as deliberately false and expressed concern that the authorities’ move may presage repressive measures against themselves and opposition organizations.
