CONSTITUTIONAL COURT TO REVIEW COALITIONS’ REGISTRATION DOCUMENTS.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 1 Issue: 101

Russia’s Constitutional Court is reviewing the registration documents of several major election blocs, including Russia’s Democratic Choice-United Democrats, headed by Yegor Gaidar; the Stanislav Govorukhin bloc; and the "Power to the People" bloc of former Soviet prime minister Nikolai Ryzhkov. The official grounds for the review is that the electoral blocs in question do not have their own charters, which election law requires. (4)

It is quite improbable that the Court would cancel the participation of these groups in the election. But the legal review is seriously delaying their election campaigns. During the election campaign of 1993, the Yeltsin administration used this tactic against its opponents.
