Correction

Publication: North Caucasus Weekly Volume: 5 Issue: 5

Because of an editorial error, the meaning of a sentence that appeared in last week’s Chechnya Weekly was significantly and improperly altered. The error occurred in the penultimate paragraph of the edition’s final article (entitled “Thoughts on Dubrovka”). The paragraph should have read as follows:

“It is crucial to keep in mind that Dunlop does NOT claim that the Russian security agencies were in total control of the Dubrovka drama–that they simply dictated every move in a scenario which unfolded precisely according to their prearranged script. What happened, in his view, was not a fully successful conspiracy either by the Russian siloviki or by Basaev’s people. The latter seem to have “outplayed” the siloviki in a game of chess, as Dunlop puts it–but nevertheless the siloviki and Putin ended up gaining enormously from the way that game actually ended. Thus, the final result differed from what any of the competing parties originally intended, as is usually the case in war and politics.”
