CRIME RATE IN THE ARMED FORCES RISING.

The crime rate among all branches of the armed forces rose by over 24 percent for the first 10 months of 1995 compared to the same period last year, Assistant Military Prosecutor Stanislav Gaveto told a news conference. The crime rate in the space forces skyrocketed by 592 percent, followed by Interior Ministry troops (220 percent), military engineers (200+ percent), border guards (80 percent), airborne troops (50 percent), and the army and navy (21 percent). Compared with past years, a higher proportion of this year’s crimes were directed against property, or took the form of bribing, bullying, and desertion. Suicides rose overall by 18 percent. (3)
