In the face of threats from Kiev, the pro-Russian Crimean parliament dropped plans to hold a referendum June 25 on the region’s desire to leave Ukraine, Kiev radio reported. The Crimean parliamentarians reportedly will soon adopt a new constitution in line with the Ukrainian one. But the dispute between Kiev and this region is not at an end: the Crimeans said they would not cancel another referendum on the possible establishment of an economic union among Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. Such a union would allow Crimea to behave independently vis a vis Kiev. Moreover, the Ukrainian radio noted, Crimean officials say they are only biding their time, waiting for Russian support.
