President Boris Yeltsin’s doctors are expected to meet today to set the date for his heart surgery. The meeting will be attended by the leading heart surgeon, Michael DeBakey, who arrived in Moscow yesterday. But Presidential spokesman Sergei Yastrzhembsky hinted on November 1 that the time of the operation may not be announced until after it has taken place. He told reporters that Yeltsin had signed a decree giving Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin temporary authority to sign agreements with Russia’s regions. Chernomyrdin will assume full presidential powers only during the operation, however. (Itar-Tass, November 1 and 3)
