Publication: Monitor Volume: 1 Issue: 58

Many bankers havebeen killed in Russia over the last two years, but the executionof Yugorsky Bank president Oleg Kantor last week has become acause celebre because of Kantor’s close links to Russian premierViktor Chernomyrdin, Radio Russia reported July 21. Another reasonis that the mysterious Felix Group, supposedly composed of formerKGB officers, had threatened to kill Chernomyrdin and others includingbankers whom the group said were "lackeys of Western influence." But commentator Aleksandr Minkin, a reported protégéof KGB General Filipp Bobkov, wrote in the July 22 Moskovskykomsomolets that the Felix Group does not exist, but is merelya provocation organized by the Main Administration for the Protectionof the Russian Federation and that body’s director, Gen. AleksandrKorzhakov.
