DUDAEV SUGGESTS MEDIATORS, TERMS FOR NEGOTIATIONS.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 65

In a lengthy interview with Azerbaijan’s Turan news agency, Djohar Dudaev accepted in principle Yeltsin’s proposal for mediated talks. Dudaev suggested former USSR president Mikhail Gorbachev, Yabloko leader Grigory Yavlinsky, Economic Freedom Party leader and Duma deputy Konstantin Borovoi, and Tatar president Mintimer Shaimiev as possible intermediaries. Dudaev traced Yeltsin’s offer to electoral tactics and reaffirmed that real negotiations must be linked to halting military operations and withdrawing Russian troops from Chechnya.
