ELECTIONS IN SVERDLOVSK AGAIN IN DOUBT.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 1 Issue: 26

The August 6 elections for governor of Sverdlovsk may not take place, Segodnya reported June 3. A local court has thrown out the local election regulations on the basis of a suit by Aleksey Strakhov, current Moscow governor there. Yeltsin’s willingness to allow gubernatorial elections in Sverdlovsk had represented a major victory for Eduard Rossel, a longtime opponent of both Yeltsin and Strakhov. Now, the authorities and possibly Yeltsin may have had second thoughts, and elections may not happen.
