FORMER PROSECUTOR GENERAL UNDER ARREST.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 42

In an unrelated case, Russia’s former acting prosecutor general Aleksei Ilyushenko was last week charged with demanding bribes and abuse of office. He was arrested on February 15, following his interrogation as a witness to the case of the Balkar Trading company, an oil exporting company based near Moscow. Appointed acting prosecutor general in February 1994, Ilyushenko was dismissed from office in October 1995. He denies the charges against him, saying they have been fabricated by officers of the Federal Security Service in revenge for his efforts to prosecute law violations by the security services when he was acting prosecutor general.
