FSB DEPUTY DIRECTOR DIES.

Publication: North Caucasus Weekly Volume: 2 Issue: 22

The deputy director of the Federal Security Service (FSB), Rear Admiral German Ugryumov, died of an apparent heart attack on May 31 at Khankala, the main Russian military base in Chechnya. A seriously overweight man (who weighed a reported 140 kilograms), Ugryumov, who was under constant stress in his job, seemed a prime candidate for a heart attack. In January of this year, Ugryumov had been effectively placed in charge of all operations–both military and civilian–in the Chechen Republic. He had not left Chechnya since the time of his appointment in January (Gazeta.ru and Lenta.ru, May 31).
