GEORGIAN GUERRILLAS ACTIVE IN ABKHAZIA.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 4 Issue: 204

A Russian soldier was killed and four were wounded in a Georgian guerrilla ambush in Abkhazia during the night of November 2-3. The incident bore a close resemblance to one on October 18 which killed a Russian soldier and wounded several. According to the Russian command, Georgian guerrillas have killed six Russian soldiers and wounded at least 20, also killing 19 Abkhaz soldiers, since June when the Georgian combatants were supposed to have left Abkhazia (Itar-Tass, November 3). Official Tbilisi is loath to crack down on Georgian refugee groups that mount these attacks. The government fears a backlash from the increasingly radicalized refugee circles. Even those still loyal to the government insist on a military solution to the problem of Abkhazia, while the most militant groups have joined the opposition front against President Eduard Shevardnadze.
