Mikhail Gorbachev, who is running for election as president of Russia, canceled a public meeting in the Siberian city of Omsk yesterday after being slapped in the face by an unidentified man. The former Soviet president was said to be shaken but not seriously hurt; his assailant was reported to be an unemployed man who had been drinking. (Interfax-Eurasia, April 24)
