Moscow police arrestedseveral members of the environmental protection group Greenpeace on May 17.The activists were protesting the Russian government’s decision to allowforeign firms to dispose their trash in Russia, Moscow Radio reported. Thedemonstrators might have vented their anger at a number of otherenvironmental issues, e.g., the decision to cut down trees in the Russiancapital in advance of V-E day to “improve” the looks of the city. Elsewhere,the Greens were active as well. In Tbilisi, Tass said, European environmentalactivists joined with representatives from the countries of the Caucasus toprotest plans to reopen the Metzamor atomic energy station in Armenia.
