As Boris Yeltsinrecovers from his heart attack, the Cardiology Research Centerin Moscow told Interfax July 19 that cardiovascular diseases hadcaused 53.5 percent deaths in Russia in 1994. Specifically, thecenter reported that 1.2 million Russians had died of heart problemsin 1994, an increase from 885,000 such deaths in 1989. And itnoted that ischemic heart disease and related illnesses are "themost frequent cause of death for 55-69 year-olds." Russianow is among the leaders of the world in the number of deathsfrom such causes in this age group, the center said.
