Citing “authoritative sources” in the Russian defense ministry, Moldova-Press and Itar-Tass reported May 5 that Lt. Gen. Aleksandr Lebed had resigned from his post as commander of the 14th Russian Army in Moldova’s Transdniestr region. But Lebed told Moscow Radio on the same day that he had not resigned, despite demands that he do so and accept a new command.
