The chief military prosecutor says a nationwide sweep netted 1,000 deserters in four days. Military sources estimate 1998 desertions at 6,000, and some observers say there at 40,000 deserters still at large…. Last year the armed forces inducted 158,000 recruits, including 110,000 into the army and navy.
