President Robert Kocharian was reelected yesterday to a five-year term with 86 percent of the vote, Karabakh ‘s electoral commission reported today. Kocharian’s two challengers had agreed with him on full independence from Azerbaijan. A trained engineer and head of Karabakh’s military effort during most of the 1988-1994 fighting, Kocharian was first elected president in 1994 for a two-year term. (Western agencies, November 25) Yesterday’s election was strongly protested by Azerbaijan and disavowed by international organizations and the countries that mediate the Azerbaijan-Karabakh Armenian conflict.
