KARAGANOV: GAULLIST STRATEGY WILL LEAD TO WESTERN CONCESSIONS

.Sergei Karaganov, the influential chairman of the Russian Councilon Foreign Policy and Defense, said Russia must pursue a policymodeled on that of French leader Charles de Gaulle in order toextract concessions from the West. In an article published inthe July 12 Segodnya, Karaganov said that Moscow shouldreject isolationism and any rapid joining of Western institutions,but instead promote the idea of partnership combined with a vociferousdefense of Russia’s interests. Such an approach will force "ourWestern partners" who are interested in keeping Russia asa partner "to make concessions not commensurate with Russia’sactual strength."
