KILLING GOES ON

A Russian marine died and two more were wounded in an August 3 firefight with rebel guerrillas, the news agency Interfax reported on August 4. The rebels ambushed the marines’ convoy as it was returning to its base in the town of Dyshni-Vedeno in Chechnya’s southern highlands.

Two members of the Kadyrov administration’s police force died after their patrol was ambushed during the night of August 2-3 in the village of Komsomolskoye, in the Gudermes district. A third policeman was hospitalized with wounds, the Itar-Tass agency reported.

According to an August 1 article in Gazeta.ru, two officers of the FSB and two of the federal Interior Ministry died when rebel guerrillas ambushed their car near the village of Pervomaiskoe in the Vedeno district on July 31. A source in the Kadyrov administration said that a fifth officer was wounded.
