LATVIA, ESTONIA DEFUSE DISPUTE.

Prime Ministers Andris Skele of Latvia and Tiit Vahi of Estonia met in Vilnius and agreed on a temporary compromise in the looming conflict over maritime border demarcation and fishing rights in the Gulf of Riga. Under the arrangement, valid until August 1, Latvia in effect accepts the demarcation line drawn by Estonia. However, Latvian trawlers will operate unrestricted in the major fishing grounds around Estonia’s Ruhnu island. (BNS, April 15)
