Yeltsin’s decision to accept Lt. Gen. Aleksandr Lebed’s retirement papers has increased anti-presidential sentiment among officers of the defense ministry, general staff and the Moscow military district, Nezavsimiaya gazeta reported Junee 21. Last week’s appeal in support of Lebed, addressed by the officers’ assembly of his 14th Army command to the entire Russian military, has found “many supporters” among Moscow-based officers, the paper said. That would indicate a possible change in attitude. At the end of last year, local commanders assured Presidential Security Service chief Gen. Aleksandr Korzhakov that their units would be politically loyal in any “critical” situation.
