Nostalgic locals met in the Volga city of Saratov on July 24 to set up a regional branch of the "Hands Off Lenin!" association. The Monitor’s correspondent in the region says participants drafted a letter protesting President Boris Yeltsin’s proposal to remove Lenin’s body from its Red Square mausoleum. They decided to mount a picket at the statue of Lenin in Saratov’s Theater Square. It is rumored that the Lenin statue is soon to be replaced by a one of Russia’s prerevolutionary prime minister, Petr Stolypin, once governor of Saratov.
