LIFE EXPECTANCIES IN RUSSIA TO FALL FURTHER.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 1 Issue: 23

The State Statistics Committee told Vechernyaya Moskva May 30 that life expectancy for Russians will fall to 58.1 years by the year 2000. Among the reasons for the decline are inadequate medical care, poor nutrition, and dramatic increases in infant mortality and in the number of industrial accidents. In 1986, life expectancy stood at 70 years–65 for men and 75 for women. In 1993, the corresponding figures were 59 and 72. The demographic service noted that in no other country among the developed world is there such a gap between male and female life expectancy.
