LITHUANIAN COMMUNIST PLOTTERS GO ON TRIAL.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 189

A Vilnius court yesterday began the trial of six leaders of the former Lithuanian Communist party/CPSU, including First Secretary Mikolas Burokiavicius and Ideological Secretary Juozas Jermalavicius. The six are accused of being co-organizers and executants of the January 1991 Soviet crackdown in Lithuania. Approximately 40 codefendants are being sheltered in Russia and Belarus. The prosecution has assembled a 300-volume dossier and can call more than 2,000 witnesses in the case. An unrepentant Burokiavicius told the opening session that this will be a "political trial against communism." (Itar-Tass, NTV, October 9)
