LITHUANIA’S BORDER PROBLEMS.

Ostankino reported on June26 that Vilnius and Moscow have agreed to a visa-free regime forcertain categories of people, but BNS said the same day that Lithuaniais having increasing difficulties with both Russia and Latviaover border demarcations in the Baltic Sea. Russian and Lithuanianofficials meet this week to try to resolve the dispute, but Lithuaniasent a protest note to Latvia for failing to continue talks onthis question. The demarcation of the sea borders are increasinglyimportant because of indications that there is a major oil fieldunder the Baltic. All three countries, plus a variety of Westernfirms, would like to exploit this find.
