LUCINSCHI ON "LONG MARCH TO EUROPE."

Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 176

Returning from official visits to France and Italy, President Petru Lucinschi told a news conference yesterday that Moldova is counting on those countries’ support in its "long march to Europe." Moldova seeks both to enter Europe and to become an East-West link owing to its location, Lucinschi said. Implicitly addressing the strong leftist opposition, Lucinschi said that Moldova itself, not the West, needs reforms. He rejected the charge that the International Monetary Fund "dictates" Chisinau’s policy. (Itar-Tass, September 22)
